I’ve watched the first season before reading the books and I can say that the show is very true to the books. For the first season/book I’d say you can choose the one you find easier to try right now, the TV show if you don’t have much time to read or the books if you have.

But in the end I’d always recommend the books. And the female characters are possibly the strongest and have the most interesting chapters of the books.
